Demand is building from more than one direction this year. Steel Dynamics reported its fabrication backlog running nearly 45% higher than a year ago, stretching into Q1 2027. Separately, a July 2026 Kase survey found 93% of retail logistics leaders expect demand to increase, and 96% started peak planning early yet 79% still expect to get forced into reactive decisions once volume actually spikes.
That gap between “we planned ahead” and “we still got caught” is usually a physical operations problem, not a forecasting one. Systems can predict a surge. Equipment has to survive it.
August is the last window with full staffing, full attention, and enough slack to catch a problem before it becomes an expensive one. Here’s where facilities quietly fall behind.
Re-Rate Your Mobility Equipment
Casters and wheels that hold up fine at normal volume start failing under back-to-back heavier, faster-moving shifts. A quick audit of load rating, wheel material, and swivel condition on your carts is a half-day task now and a line-stopping problem later. Upgrading to Heavy-Duty Casters rated for your actual floor and load conditions is one of the cheapest fixes on this list.
Reconfigure Storage Before Volume Climbs
Layouts that made sense at last year’s inventory mix often don’t fit this year’s flow. Reslotting so high-turnover items sit closest to where they’re needed cuts travel time and eases aisle congestion — but only if it happens weeks ahead, not during peak. Selective Pallet Rack gives quick access to palletized inventory, Cantilever Rack handles long stock like pipe and lumber, and Carton Flow Rack keeps high-turnover product moving on gravity-fed lanes.
Watch Your Fixed Bottlenecks
Conveyors, lift tables, and transfer points that run fine at normal throughput are usually the first thing to choke once volume climbs — and the hardest to replace on short notice, given long lead times on custom equipment. If a fixed point in your line is already running near capacity in August, it won’t absorb a 30% increase. Installing or upgrading Conveyor Systems now creates continuous flow instead of manual carrying and delay.
Service Lift Equipment Against Real Use, Not the Calendar
Forklifts, stackers, and pallet jacks that skip maintenance during slower months tend to fail during the surge, not before it. Check hour meters, not just dates. Stackers and Lift Tables that position loads at proper working height also reduce fatigue-driven wear and injury risk during extended shifts.
Shore Up Safety Before the Incident, Not After
More overtime, more temporary staff, more urgency all of it correlates with more incidents, especially among workers less familiar with a specific floor’s hazards. Fall Arrest Systems and proper overhead lift coverage with Jib Cranes are inexpensive to address now and far costlier after something goes wrong in November.
Add Overflow Capacity Now
Mezzanines and Modular Buildings are the fastest way to add usable square footage without a construction project. Facilities that wait until inventory is already stacking up in the aisles end up solving a space problem under the worst time pressure, at the worst price.
The Calendar Is Still on Your Side
Every one of these gaps is solvable in a normal maintenance window. Almost none of them are solvable once volume is already climbing. The facilities that come out of year-end in good shape are the ones whose carts roll, whose racking holds, whose conveyors keep moving, and whose lift equipment doesn’t go down on the one day it can’t afford to.
At B&C Industrial Products, we help operations get ahead of peak with storage systems, conveyors, lifting equipment, casters, and other material handling solutions built for productivity, safety, and long-term performance.
