Bar, Tube & Pipe Storage Racks
Honeycomb racks give every size its own slot. Up to 7,000 pounds a slot, any length, and your crew picks stock by hand instead of pulling a bundle apart.
Long stock is awkward to store and worse to pick. Bundle it on a cantilever arm and you can hold a lot of it, but getting one piece of 1 inch square tube out of the middle means moving everything on top of it. Somebody ends up climbing, or the whole bundle comes down.
A honeycomb rack takes the other approach: separate hexagonal slots, one size per slot, open front. Your operator walks up, sees what is there, and pulls the piece out by hand.
What a honeycomb rack does well
- Up to 7,000 lb per slot. These are not light-duty pigeonholes.
- Unlimited length. The rack is modular along its length, so 20 ft and 24 ft stock is not a problem.
- Variable slot sizes. Wide slots for large tube, tight slots for rod and flat bar, in the same rack.
- Hand picking. Small stock comes out one piece at a time without a forklift or a crane.
- Crane loading. A bridge crane can drop a full bundle into a slot in one lift.
- Structural enough to carry a mezzanine, which is worth knowing if you are short on floor.
Watch a honeycomb rack get picked 1:14
Slot sizes vary within one rack, so large pipe and thin rod share a frame. Every size has one home, and one person pulls a single piece without touching anything else.
Inventory side benefit: when every size lives in a known slot, a cycle count is a walk down the aisle instead of an afternoon. Shops that struggle to keep long-stock inventory accurate usually find that is the payback, not the floor space.

Honeycomb or cantilever?
They solve different problems and plenty of shops run both. The short version:
| Honeycomb rack | Cantilever rack | |
|---|---|---|
| Best for | Many sizes, picked one piece at a time | Bundles and full lifts of the same size |
| Picking | By hand, from the open face | Forklift or crane, whole bundle |
| Density | Higher for mixed inventory | Higher for bulk quantity |
| Inventory visibility | Excellent, one size per slot | Depends on how it is loaded |
| Typical user | Job shop, maintenance crib, fab shop | Service center, lumber yard, distributor |
If you carry a wide range of sizes in small quantities, honeycomb. If you buy and move full bundles, cantilever. If you do both, and most fab shops do, a honeycomb rack for pick stock alongside cantilever racking for bulk is the usual answer.
Common questions
How much does one slot hold?
Up to 7,000 pounds. Slot capacity depends on the slot size and configuration, so we confirm the number against your actual material list when we quote it.
Can slot sizes be mixed in one rack?
Yes, and they usually are. Large slots for big tube and pipe at the bottom, tighter slots for rod, flat bar and angle up top.
What lengths will it hold?
The rack is modular along its length, so there is no practical limit. Tell us your longest stock and how much of it you carry and we will size it.
Can it be loaded with an overhead crane?
Yes. Crane loading of full bundles is one of the design intents. It can also be loaded by forklift or by hand for lighter stock.
Can we put a mezzanine on top of it?
The structure is rated to support a mezzanine. That has to be engineered for your specific load and layout, so bring it up early if it is part of the plan.
Will it hold lumber and non-metal stock?
Yes. The slots do not care what is in them. A closed tray option is available for flexible material that would otherwise sag.
